Care guided by the ASAM Criteria

Strength-based addiction treatment rooted in the ASAM Criteria. Every step forward is yours.

Every care decision begins with you—not a checklist. Our multidimensional assessment considers substance use, physical health, emotional health, readiness for change, relapse risk, and your recovery environment.

We recognize your strengths, support system, lived experience, and resilience, then build a plan designed to help you move forward.

“Recovery isn’t a destination—it’s a direction. We help you find yours.”

What to expect when starting treatment

Understanding the process can help you take ownership of your care.

How do I begin services?

Call us or complete the contact form to schedule your required initial appointment. No referral is required. A care coordinator will answer questions and gather basic information. Next, a clinician completes a comprehensive ASAM-based assessment, recommends the appropriate level of care, and develops an individualized treatment plan with you before services begin.

What does the ASAM assessment cover?

The assessment reviews six areas: intoxication and withdrawal risk, biomedical conditions, emotional and cognitive needs, readiness to change, relapse or continued-use potential, and the recovery environment.

How is IOP different from residential treatment?

IOP provides 9–19 hours of scheduled clinical programming each week while participants live at home and continue many everyday responsibilities. Residential care provides 24-hour support.

Who is eligible for IOP?

IOP may fit someone who needs more support than weekly outpatient counseling but does not require 24-hour residential care. A clinical assessment during the initial appointment determines final placement.

Do I need a referral, and what should I bring?

No referral is required. Please bring identification, your insurance information, a current medication list, and any relevant treatment records to your initial appointment.

What is the current schedule?

Programming is offered for 9–19 hours per week. Contact our team for current meeting days, session times, and available openings.

What insurance do you accept?

We currently accept Medicaid, Aetna, and Anthem insurance. Coverage and authorization requirements vary by plan, so our team will verify benefits before services begin.

Where are you located?

Ascending Partners LLC is located at 705 London Street, Portsmouth, VA 23703.

Is transportation assistance available?

We can help connect participants with free or discounted transportation options. Discuss your transportation needs during intake because availability and eligibility may vary.

Can family members be involved?

When appropriate and with the participant’s permission, family therapy, education, and support may be included in care.
